Advanced Training in Evidence-Based Psychological Care
My clinical work is grounded in evidence-based practices (EBPs) with strong research support for treating anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), life stressors, and emotion regulation difficulties. I draw from CBT, ACT, and DBT for my individual work, and the SPACE and LEAP programs for my work with parents.
Frequently
Asked
Questions
How do I get started?
If you’ve explored this website and believe my expertise and approach is a good fit for you, please submit an inquiry through the Contact Form or email directly at sarah@drsaraholivo.com. Let me know what you're hoping to get out of our work together, whether you'd like in-person or virtual therapy, and whether you have any scheduling limitations. I will get back to you and let you know if I have any current or anticipated availability to help. If I have availability, the next step is to have a brief consultation by phone to answer any preliminary questions you may have. You do not need to have a specific diagnosis or know your treatment goals when we speak.
What kind of clients do you work with?
I specialize in working with older adolescents (15+), college students and adults. I also work with parents who want consultation about behavior management, or who have a child, teen or young adult struggling with mental health or behavioral issues. The majority of my clients seek me out to help with anxiety, OCD or mild depression. I also work with many clients on navigating common but interfering life stressors and transitions, such as navigating early career choices, managing difficult parenting decisions, or finding purpose as an empty nester.
What kind of therapy do you do?
I have advanced training in both classic and modern forms of cognitive behavioral therapy, including Exposure and Response Prevention (E/RP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy. I'm also approved as a S.P.A.C.E. provider and can offer treatment to parents of children, teens and young adults struggling with debilitating OCD and anxiety.
Are there clients who aren't a great fit?
The youngest clients I typically accept for therapy are adolescents wrapping up middle school and beginning high school. If you are looking for a therapist for your child, I can try to recommend a colleague. And though I have been intensively trained in DBT for adolescents, I do not provide standard outpatient DBT which consists of individual and group therapy, a consultation team for therapists, and between-sessions skills coaching. In addition, the following areas are better served by other talented colleagues: family and couples therapy, substance abuse, trauma, eating disorders treatment, habit reversal for tics, and therapy for autism spectrum disorder.
Do you accept insurance?
I don’t accept insurance and am considered an out-of-network provider. You can check with your insurer to understand if you can be reimbursed for our work together; I will provide you with monthly receipts (“superbills”) for our weekly appointments. As an initial step you can call your insurance provider to inquire about their reimbursement rate for out-of-network therapy conducted by a licensed psychologist.
